Grade Teacher

Introduction

An opportunity has become available for a Grade 000 Teacher at a private preschool based in Waterkloof Pretoria.

The school was established in and attracts domestic as well as international children from diverse cultural backgrounds.  We are passionate about teaching and developing our learners to build a foundation that equips them to reach their full potential.

A responsible, vibrant and dynamic person with an absolute passion for young children would be a cultural fit for our environment.  The ideal candidate will not only be a fully engaged educator and carer, but also have an appetite for general- and staff managerial responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Planning and -Management

  • Plan comprehensive curriculums to address early childhood development needs.
  • Establish the annual master schedule for instructional programmes, ensuring sequential learning experiences. Maintain this master schedule to be available to all teachers and other relevant staff.
  • Supervise the instructional programmes of the school, evaluating lesson plans and observing classes.
  • Organise and supervise procedures for identifying and addressing special needs of children including health- and emotional-related concerns.
  • Promote high standards and expectations regarding academic performance for all children and aid in driving such standards with all staff.
  • Keep staff informed and actively seek ideas for the continuous improvement of the school.

General Management

  • Conduct regular meetings, as necessary, to discuss and address matters relevant to the proper functioning of the school.
  • Establish schedules and procedures for the supervision of children in non-classroom areas (including before and after school).
  • Attend management- and strategic meetings and contribute to the development of high-quality childcare, education and crèche services.
  • Establish and maintain an effective inventory system for all school supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Establish procedures that create and maintain attractive, organised, functional, healthy, clean and safe facilities.
  • Assume responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of children, employees and visitors.
  • Develop clearly understood procedures and provide regular drills for emergencies and disasters.  Ensure that all staff are trained in such procedures.
  • Supervise the exclusion from the school of any child who shows departure from normal health, who has been exposed to a communicable disease or whose presence may reasonably be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of other children. Ensure that the excluded child’s parents or guardian are apprised of the reasons for exclusion in a sensitive manner.
  • Maintain an inclusive environment that welcomes and accommodates all cultures and forms of diversity – including all South African diversity as well as international diversity.

Staff Management and Leadership

  • Identify the staff resources required and organise the recruitment, induction and training of all childcare staff.
  • Support staff, encouraging them to participate in activities and events and providing models of good practice to enhance their existing skills and ongoing development.
  • Delegate tasks, where appropriate and necessary, to suitably qualified and experienced staff that are in line with their responsibilities.
  • Enforce uniform and appearance policy to assure that the school’s professional image is maintained.
  • Aid in building positive morale among staff and children.

Financial Supervision and Oversight

  • Maintain and account for all children activity funds and monies collected from parents.
  • Oversee the effective administration and recording of fee collection.

Education and Teaching

  • Prepare conscientiously for lessons by gathering materials and setting up workstations.
  • Educate children about fundamental concepts, such as colors, letters, numbers and shapes.
  • Engage in creative methods of learning such as arts and crafts, supervised play and storytelling.
  • Encourage social interactions between children and improve their self-esteem.
  • Provide and supervise safe recreation and play for the children.
  • Monitor free time on the playground.
  • Encourage children to take responsibility for their behaviour.
  • Instil a sense of order and discipline in the classroom.
  • Ensure that the classroom is a clean, safe, and organized environment.

Parental / Guardian Liaison

  • Engage in regular communication with parents, seeking their support and input, in order to aid in the development of a cooperative relationship.
  • Communicate with parents to better understand the children’s home-lives and factors potentially impacting on their mental state.
  • Prepare reports for parents on each child’s developmental progress in addition to preparing quarterly children’s grade and behavioural reports.
  • Drive and facilitate the content and dissemination of the school’s newsletter and communiqués to parents.

Administration

  • File all required reports regarding matters that involve violence, vandalism, attendance and discipline matters.
  • Establish procedures for the safe and confidential storage of all public and confidential school records.
  • Protect the confidentiality of records and information gained by exercising professional duties and use conscientious discretion in sharing such information only with those required to know same.

Reporting

  • Immediately notify the Director in the event of reasonably suspected substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical- or social conditions or similar serious concerns.
  • Advise the Director in the event of staff failing to meet their contractual agreement / requirements from them.
  • Complete, in a timely fashion, all records and reports requested by the Director.
  • Communicate with the Director regularly about the needs, successes and general operation of the school.

General

  • Holidays:
    • Shutdown period – Usually 3 weeks
  • Start Date – ASAP

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Grade 12
  • Educational Qualification – Tertiary degree or similar
  • 3 years’ experience in a similar role including working with young children in a classroom setting
  • Preschool or primary school experience
  • Computer literate
  • A valid certificate in First Aid and CPR would be advantageous
  • Fully Covid-19 vaccinated
  • Prior managerial experience is preferred
