Tekano

Communications Manager

Tekano’s purpose is to build the capacity of visionary, values-based, change-makers to advocate for health equity in South Africa. This will be delivered through a team of individuals sharing two critical traits:

Duties & Responsibilities

The Communications Manager is responsible for all communications activities at Tekano. The role will develop and implement communications strategies that will ensure prompt, efficient and quality communications amongst all internal stakeholders at Tekano (staff, fellows and Board). The role will also ensure smooth, and timeous communications with all of Tekano’s external stakeholders including all other Atlantic Fellowships across the world.

The role will highlight the work of the work of Tekano, including that of fellows, through various media and communications platforms.   Maintaining a positive image of the organisation and communicate the organisation’s vision, goals and objectives. The role will position Tekano as a leader in leadership development for health equity and will enhance Tekano’s public image and brand, protect the institution’s reputation and credibility.

It will oversee online learning platforms, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and working in collaboration with other team members and related service providers.

Communication Leadership

  • Develop and lead and implementation of Tekano communication strategy in alignment to Tekano Strategic Priorities.
  • Develop, monitor and review Tekano communications, media and digital media strategies, including using analytics for evidence-based decision making.
  • Develop programmes/ departments/ event focused communications strategies and plans.
  • Engage proactively with the Executive Management Team to ascertain their communication needs, share information, knowledge and tools to enhance their communication effectiveness.
  • Promote Tekano’s public media profile, brand to enhance the organisation’s visibility, reputation and credibility.
  • Keep abreast of new communications tools, developments and trends that could enhance Tekano’s work.
  • Develop and implement capacity development plans, building communication skills and technical capacity across Tekano by facilitating training for staff
  • Commission articles and news/positioning articles, events for online and print media publication.
  • Develop and monitor the Communication’s budget and use the funds to support creative and innovative projects.
  • Collaborate with other Atlantic Fellowship groups to share knowledge and lessons learnt in relation to communication strategies.

Programme Communications Curation and Coordination

  • Work closely with the Programmes Director to develop the communications component and outputs of the Fellowship programmes.
  • Enhance Fellow usage of communications tools and platforms for social change
  • Communicate and curate Fellows work across the fellowship programmes.
  • Coordinate communications within the team, promotion and profiling the work done by the fellows and the fellowship programme.
  • Promotion of social media content, using digital technologies and e-learning methodologies.
  • Provide online knowledge hub maintenance, fellows data management and continued learning.

Information and Online Communications

  • Work in collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Manager to develop a user-friendly knowledge management system that will ensure that Tekano archives all of its information and tools such as Fellows handbooks, research papers, evaluation documents, policy documents, audio-visual materials etc.
  • Coordinate and support information and communication management planning, working in collaboration with the Finance Director and IT service providers.
  • Undertake research and advice regarding online learning systems/ applications and use of new advanced technology.
  • Support the maintenance and development of online learning platforms, liaise with the IT service providers to ensure alignment to Tekano goals.

Internal Communications

  • Lead and implement a range of internal communication strategies to ensure effective communication across Tekano.
  • Facilitate media, social media and media advocacy training for Tekano staff and Fellows.
  • Engage proactively with partners, constituents, and staff members, to ascertain needs, share information, knowledge and tools to enhance collaborative communication abilities and effectiveness.

Public Relations and Branding

  • Develop the communications and brand positioning plan, ensuring alignment to Tekano’s strategic plan.
  • Develop and monitor the Events Calendar working in collaboration with MEL Manager and the Programmes Director, submit Events Calendar to CE for sign off
  • Coordinate the execution of communications events in conjunction with Tekano Events Calendar.
  • Identify marketing opportunities and develop strategies to leverage them.
  • Explore branding opportunities including Tekano’s participation in exhibitions, conferences and seminars, external education of communities, and educational events and workshops.
  • Work with the CE and the Executive Management Team, prepare and execute media plans for the promotion of Tekano projects and campaigns.
  • Act as the custodian of the Tekano brand and ensure implementation of the branding across Tekano.
  • Ensure that all stationery, equipment and facilities are branded in line with Tekano and Atlantic Fellows Branding guidelines and policies.

Media Relations

  • Manage Tekano’s media relations work, working closely with Executive Management and other managers.
  • Enhance the reach and impact of Tekano’s work through proactive engagement with the media and other creative communications strategies.
  • Help build and maintain relationships with relevant media houses and journalists; drafting and issuing press releases; organising press conferences and briefings.
  • Ensure the procedures for media events and press releases are circulated and followed.

Website and Social Media

  • Keep abreast of all social media and virtual communications tools
  • Manage the website and social media activities.
  • Manage the website and ensure that it is regularly updated with a wide range of compelling content and that the website becomes the pre-eminent website on the Tekano mission.
  • Ensure that Tekano maximises its social media presence and impact, through its Twitter, Facebook and other identified accounts.

Ad hoc duties

  • From time to time carry out any other duties that are within the scope of the job.

  • Collaboration –work collaboratively across Tekano project initiatives/ functions, in a team-orientated organisation to support Tekano’s purpose and build the organisation.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Excellent written, spoken and electronic communication skills.
  • Knowledge of marketing techniques, advertising principles, strategies and techniques, pertaining to a range of media.
  • Ability to manage, train and develop information, communication technology
  • Knowledge of different communications applications, online tools/ software
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate media activities.
  • Advanced Computer systems and skills,
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent administrative skills, coupled with a strong ability to plan, organise and control.
  • Comfortable with diversity and respectful of a wide range of faiths, beliefs and experiences.
  • Commitment and dedication to promoting health equity in South Africa is crucial.
  • Driven by passion and a vision for a better future coupled with intentional action with the goal of bringing about social change.

Required years of experience at this level

A minimum of 8 working years’ experience in a communications leadership function, with 3 years in a similar management role with equivalent experience.

  • Additional South African language

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • A Degree qualification in Communications/ Journalism or Marketing or related fields.
